The Summarize-and-Carry Technique for Long Projects
Is lesson ke baad tum
Carry current decisions, open questions, a useful style sample, and the next task into a fresh conversation. Validate the next output; a confirmation alone is not proof.
In this lesson
Create a short handoff that lets work continue in a fresh conversation. You will check it against a supplied decision log, then use it for one small task. A new account or a long chat history is not required.
A Handoff Is a Checked Brief
A handoff carries the information needed for the next task. It is useful at a project change, after a connection problem, or when a conversation becomes difficult to follow. Age alone does not tell you whether a thread is usable.
An assistant can summarise only material it can access. Compare its summary with your source notes; an omitted decision will not reappear just because the model says it remembers.
Use four sections: decisions, open questions, style sample, and next step. Add a source name and review date so you can return to the evidence.
Worked Example
This fictional workshop log is the source:
Workshop: Beginner Excel, Lahore.
Earlier draft: Saturday, 10 am, Room A.
Approved change: Saturday, 11 am, Room B.
Fee: PKR 1,000. Payment method has not been decided.
Tone: Friendly, plain English. No urgency or seat-count claims.
Accepted phrase: "Bring a laptop if you have one."
Next task: Draft an attendee reminder.Suppose the summary says “Saturday, 10 am, Room B; pay online.” Two errors need fixing: 10 am was replaced, and online payment was never approved.
A corrected handoff is:
Source: Fictional workshop decision log, checked for this exercise.
Decisions: Beginner Excel workshop in Lahore; Saturday, 11 am,
Room B; fee PKR 1,000. Use friendly plain English.
Open question: Payment method is not decided.
Style sample: "Bring a laptop if you have one."
Next step: Draft a reminder using these facts, with no payment
instructions, urgency claim, or invented seat count. The rejected 10 am draft does not need to travel as an active fact. If explaining a change matters, label it explicitly as superseded.
Do This Now
Spend about six minutes on this extension:
- Add the approved fact “Room B is on the ground floor” to the source log.
- Update the handoff, leaving the payment method unresolved.
- In a fresh conversation, paste the handoff and ask for a reminder under 60 words. Without an assistant, draft it yourself from the handoff.
- Check the reminder against the source log, not against the assistant's promise that it understood.
Sample acceptable result:
Your Beginner Excel workshop is on Saturday at 11 am in Room B, on the ground floor, Lahore. The fee is PKR 1,000. Bring a laptop if you have one.
Your wording can differ. The date description, time, room, floor, and fee must remain accurate. There should be no payment link, invented address, or old 10 am start time. If the output fails, correct the handoff or task as needed and inspect the next actual reminder.
What to Keep and Leave Behind
Keep current decisions, unresolved questions, necessary examples, and links to approved sources. Leave behind irrelevant chat, duplicate drafts, and abandoned directions unless they explain a constraint.
Do not compress away meaningful uncertainty. “Payment method undecided” is useful information. Replacing it with a plausible guess makes the handoff less trustworthy.
For real client work, save the checked brief in an approved location with the current review date. Use only the material you are permitted to copy into the next tool.
