Audit Your Resume and LinkedIn Without Inventing Evidence

Lesson 3 of 15

Is lesson ke baad tum

Improve the document when the evidence exists. Build and label new evidence when the skill is missing; a clearer sentence cannot create experience.

In this lesson

Find the difference between evidence missing from a document and a skill you have not yet demonstrated. You will use three supplied vacancy excerpts and a fictional candidate's notes to build a small action table. A live LinkedIn profile is optional.

Missing Wording and Missing Skill Need Different Actions

A resume can understate real work. It can also lack a skill because the candidate has never used it. Separate these cases:

ClassificationEvidence testNext action
Have it, didn't show itA real task, project, or record supports the requirement.Add or clarify that evidence in the relevant section.
Genuinely missingThe candidate cannot yet demonstrate the requirement.Plan learning and a proof task; do not claim it yet.

If the evidence is ambiguous, ask a factual question before classifying. Do not force uncertainty into either label. Also preserve whether an employer calls a requirement required or preferred; repetition across posts does not change that label.

Worked Example

Fictional candidate Ayesha: Her resume says “Assisted the sales team.” Her notes say she compiled weekly Excel summaries from sales sheets submitted by four representatives during a three-month internship. A dated university-society folder contains a six-week content calendar she maintained. She has never used a CRM or built an analytics dashboard. Her LinkedIn About says only “BBA graduate seeking marketing opportunities.”

Three fictional junior marketing excerpts:

  • Post A: Excel reporting required; Canva preferred.
  • Post B: Content-calendar maintenance required; dashboard experience preferred.
  • Post C: Written communication required; CRM familiarity preferred.

A useful audit starts with these rows:

RequirementEvidenceClassificationAction
A: Excel reporting, requiredWeekly summaries, four representatives, three monthsHave it, didn't show itReplace vague internship wording with that scope.
B: Content calendar, requiredSix-week university-society calendarHave it, didn't show itAdd a clearly labelled project bullet.
B: Dashboard, preferredCandidate says noneGenuinely missingComplete a practice dashboard before claiming it.
C: CRM familiarity, preferredCandidate says noneGenuinely missingComplete beginner practice and create a sample pipeline.

The evidence does not establish Canva or written communication yet. Ask about them; do not infer either from “marketing.”

A supported resume edit is: “Compiled weekly Excel summaries from sales sheets submitted by four representatives during a three-month internship.” It makes the actual work clearer without adding improved sales or dashboard expertise.

Try a Focused Audit Prompt

prompt to try7 lines
Compare the supplied vacancy excerpts with the candidate's documents
and evidence notes. Quote the requirement and preserve required/preferred.
For each missing item, show the exact evidence or ask a factual question.
When confirmed, classify as "Have it, didn't show it" or "Genuinely missing."
Recommend a document edit only when evidence supports it.
For a genuine gap, suggest a learning-and-proof task instead.
Do not invent skills or predict hiring.

Use the sample inputs above in an assistant, or build the table manually.

Hands-On Exercise

Ayesha adds one verified fact: “I wrote and emailed the weekly summary to my supervisor.” Change only the written communication row.

Then diagnose this proposed edit:

“Managed CRM-driven campaigns and analytics dashboards to improve sales.”

Write the supported communication row, reject the unsupported edit, and choose one genuine gap for a small proof task.

Check your work: Written communication can now be “Have it, didn't show it,” supported by writing and emailing the summary. The CRM/dashboard/sales-improvement sentence remains unsupported. The new communication evidence does not establish those unrelated skills.

A bounded proof task could be “create a sample CRM pipeline with five fictional contacts and explain each stage.” Label it practice if completed; it does not become professional CRM employment.

Keep Documents Consistent

If the resume and LinkedIn disagree on a title or date, check the original record and correct the inaccurate document. Do not ask AI which version sounds stronger. A family-business task, university project, or volunteer role can be useful evidence when labelled accurately.

Optional transfer: Save three current, comparable live posts with URLs and access dates, then repeat the audit with redacted versions of your own documents. Keep real evidence in a controlled location and share only what the task requires.
