A search result becomes a useful lead only after current status, eligibility and the official application route have been checked.
In this lesson
Turn a search result into a checked job lead. A title or the word “remote” is not enough: you need the employer's current role details and eligibility rules.
Use the supplied fictional excerpts first. No account or live vacancy is required for the core exercise.
Worked Example
Candidate constraint: lives in Lahore; seeks junior reporting work; cannot relocate abroad.
Search result: “Junior Data Analyst — remote — Sample A.”
Employer-page excerpt for the same role: “Junior Data Analyst, reference A-12. Remote within the United States only. Applicants must be authorised to work there. Applications open.”
A draft AI summary says, “Suitable remote role for a Pakistan-based graduate.”
The correct decision is do not queue this role under the stated constraints. The employer excerpt supplies an explicit restriction. It is not merely missing information. Record the reference and reason so another copy of A-12 does not re-enter your queue.
Now change the employer excerpt to “Remote; country eligibility not stated.” The decision becomes unclear—confirm country eligibility. Missing permission is not proof of either eligibility or ineligibility.
Build One Search You Can Explain
Start with a role phrase and location. On Google, try:
"data analyst" Lahore -seniorQuotes keep the phrase together; the minus excludes pages containing the following term. To check one known employer domain, add site:employer.example, replacing the placeholder with its real domain. Overly narrow searches can hide useful roles: an otherwise junior advertisement may mention a senior colleague. Read a few results before adding exclusions.
LinkedIn's main search supports uppercase AND, OR and NOT, with quotes and parentheses. For example:
("data analyst" OR "MIS analyst") NOT seniorUse the available job/location filters and inspect actual results; do not assume identical syntax or results across services. An alert saves the search criteria, not proof that each result qualifies. LinkedIn currently offers daily or weekly job alerts through email or app notifications.
Hands-On Exercise
Classify these fictional lead pairs for the same Lahore candidate. Give each one a decision and the next check.

Use 6 October 2026 as today's date. Assume the candidate has documented Excel reporting experience and SQL coursework, but no SQL work experience.
Write one useful search query, then a three-row note with: reference, eligibility evidence, status, decision and next action. AI may organise the excerpts if you tell it to use only the supplied text and write “not stated” for missing facts.
Completion Rubric
- B-07: unclear country eligibility; ask through an official employer channel or locate the full role details before queuing.
- C-03: reasonable to queue for a fuller fit check. The location is reachable, the date is before the stated deadline and Excel is supported. Keep SQL labelled coursework; preferred does not mean required.
- D-09: closed; do not let a newer repost override the employer's status for the same reference.
For a real lead, save the direct URL and date checked. An indexed page or search date does not prove a vacancy is still open. Follow links from the employer's own site to its hiring platform rather than trusting a familiar platform logo alone.
If a message asks for money or identity documents before you can verify the vacancy, stop and confirm through an independently located employer contact. Do not share private documents in the practice chat.
