Make Your Resume Easy to Read and Parse

Lesson 4 of 15

Is lesson ke baad tum

Make resume evidence easy to extract and read. Use relevant job language only when the underlying facts support it, and check the real application's fields.

In this lesson

Format a small resume excerpt so its text reads in a sensible order. Then check that its skill wording matches supplied evidence. You can use a word processor, a notes app, or the sample extraction below; no application needs to be submitted.

Understand the Three Separate Checks

An applicant tracking system, or ATS, manages applications. A parser may extract fields such as titles, employers, and dates. An employer may also search or match candidates and ask separate screening questions. These processes vary; a generic “ATS score” does not reveal a particular employer's decision.

Your practical checks are:

  1. Can the text be extracted in the right order?
  2. Can a person find the relevant, truthful evidence?
  3. Are the application's separate questions answered accurately?

Formatting cannot repair missing work authorisation, experience, or another essential requirement.

Use a Plain Starting Format

Prefer one main text column, familiar section headings, ordinary bullets, and consistent dates. Keep essential contact details in the body. Avoid making a graphic or header the only place where a key fact appears.

Greenhouse's official parsing guidance lists complex layouts, columns, and header/footer or text-box information among possible parsing problems. That is a reason to test a simple layout, not proof that every ATS behaves identically.

Follow the actual employer's file instructions. When both are accepted, a text-based PDF or DOCX can be appropriate. A scanned image is a poor starting point for reliable text extraction.

Worked Example

These are fictional practice facts:

prompt to try5 lines
Candidate: Areeba, Lahore
Internship: Marketing Intern, Sample Retail, Jan 2026–Mar 2026
Work: Cleaned campaign spreadsheets and prepared a weekly Excel
summary, emailed to the supervisor.
Power BI: beginner tutorial only; no completed project.

Suppose a draft already overstates the skill as “Power BI expert” and uses a two-column design. Its simulated text extraction is:

prompt to try3 lines
Areeba EDUCATION Jan 2026 Mar 2026 Excel
Sample Retail Marketing Intern Lahore
Power BI expert Weekly summaries

Two different problems appear: reading order is confused, and “Power BI expert” is unsupported. Repairing layout alone would leave the false claim.

A clearer excerpt is:

prompt to try11 lines
Areeba
Lahore, Pakistan

EXPERIENCE
Marketing Intern — Sample Retail
Jan 2026–Mar 2026
- Cleaned campaign spreadsheets and prepared a weekly Excel
  summary for supervisor review.

LEARNING
Power BI — beginner tutorial; no completed project yet.

The learning line is optional. It must not become professional Power BI experience.

Hands-On Exercise

Build the plain excerpt above in a document or note. Add this fictional vacancy requirement: “Excel reporting required; Power BI preferred.”

Make a two-row map from requirement to evidence, then copy the formatted excerpt into a plain-text note. Inspect headings, role, employer, dates, and bullet order. Without a word processor, annotate what is wrong in the simulated extraction and write the repaired version.

Check your work: Excel reporting maps to the weekly summary. Power BI remains labelled learning; a tutorial does not establish expertise. The text should keep Sample Retail with Marketing Intern and Jan–Mar 2026. “Preferred” does not mean you may invent a stronger match.

A copy-and-paste check is a useful proxy, not a guarantee of portal parsing. During a real application, inspect and correct auto-filled fields before submission.

Failure Cases to Diagnose

  • Contact details disappear: Move essential details into ordinary body text and retest.
  • Roles and dates get mixed: Use one column and keep each role's employer and dates together.
  • The resume repeats every keyword: Remove unsupported terms and attach supported ones to evidence.
  • An external score drives endless edits: Return to extractable text, relevant evidence, and human readability.

For real applications in Pakistan, keep city and availability accurate. Add professional contact details to the submission copy, but omit CNIC, full address, and reference contacts from the AI drafting input unless a specific authorised task requires them.
